Bumper Bits?

Recommended Posts

As far as i'm aware they go on the beaks of the birds that are pecking the others, which stops them from pulling the feathers out while still allowing them to eat and drink etc......

I'm sure someone else will be allong to correct me if i'm wrong.......Sure I read it on here though...... :)

Oooooh..... now I understand what they are... with my mind on a different planet, 'bumper' bits brought images of cars in my mind... maybe Hubby has been spending way too much time under his cadillac if even I start seeing cars when talking chickens!!!!

They're called bumper bits because they are bits (in the sense of a horse's bit, i.e. it goes in the mouth) and the rounded bit at the end acts as a bumper, stopping the hen from stabbling with its beak.

I can recommend them wholeheartedly. Chickens can seriously damage each other, and these simple little devices cause them no obvious suffering, and allow the pecked chickens to heal and gain confidence.

Two of mine wear bumper bits now: as soon as my new Gingernut started removing feathers off my new Pepperpot's bottom, it was on. (I am rather proud, as I fitted it single-handed: I was too cross to wait for help.)

I waited far too long (months) to fit my previous hen with a bumper bit because I thought it was cruel. I now think it is cruel shutting up innocent gentle hens with one of these feather-pluckers.
