Does anyone just keep bantams?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking this is the way forward for us, for various reasons.

We currently have two pekin bantam chicks (approx 6 weeks old) which we're keeping indoors for the moment, due to the atrocious weather. Collecting another two pekin chicks this evening. I think we may just stop there, or perhaps add to our flock with a couple of light Sussex bantams when we can find them (there seems to be a real dearth of them at the moment - is it the time of year?).

Just interested to know if anyone else just has bantams?

I currently have around 200 chickens and all but four are bantams :D

The lack of fully grown chickens for sale is probably due to the time of year although you should be able to get some chicks - try the Sussex breed club - they may have a list of local breeders

Quite a lot of us only have banties. Mine are supposed to be banties (Silkies, Polands and Frizzles), though quite a few are what Redwing would call 'in betweenies' :D

For POL chooks you really need to be looking later in the year, possibly c July, as it is hatching time (hatch) at the moment. I'd recommend that you don't get to your maximum amount of chooks right away anyway as, if you are like most of us on here, you are bound to contract Morehens disease sooner or later and simply have to get more chooks / try out a different breed
