Ariella26
I have woodchip in the run. Do I need a cover/roof through the summer months? I have a plastic sheet/tarp ready for the winter but I guess it'd affect the ventilation and act as a greenhouse when it's warm. Is the woodchip okay to get wet when we have rainy days through the summer?
Plum
Yes woodchip is fine getting wet, it'll help wash the dropping off. I would rake it through occasionally and chuck some garden lime in every 3 months to keep it fresh. If it starts getting muddy pop the cover on but as you say it can turn it into a greenhouse. My WIR has a permanent roof but I put a sunshade up to keep them cool
Sammiboo
i have the omlet waterproof cover on mine and now in summer i have a shade on too. I did take the cover off but the run got quite wet when we had the torrential rain so i stuck it back on again....
Redwing
It should be fine but if we get consistent rain it may be worth covering the run A partial cover may be a compromise as it will provide shade too (providing its not clear!) and although pletnty of people leave leave their runs uncovered all the time I find the birds do look miserable in the rain and its not particularly good for them All of my runs are still covered after the winter and the downpours of last month, During the recent hot weather I simply peeled back the covers a bit Theyre back on now though - lovely weather
Ariella26
Thanks for your replies. I've put the cover over half the run so 3m is dry and the other 2m is open. I can add the sunshade to that end, should the sun decide to put its hat back on. I'm desperate for it to get warmer and drier so I can sit for longer watching them.
