mimi5
Hi all. Sadly last night my only hen not with chicks passed away She had been fading away despite mine & the vets best efforts I myself am in hospital and hubby & the teenagers have been doing their best. But this leaves Monty all alone in the cube. Oldest chicks are 3 weeks & with mum. Youngest chicks 1 week also with their mum. What can I do??? Many thanks, all being well I can go home later today. Space Chick
Mum with the 3 week old chicks will probably lose interest in about 3 weeks time. If you think this is too long for Monty to be without some female company, then I'd get some new adult hens in. Sorry for your loss, and I hope you will be better and home soon. jeshen
Sorry to hear about you not being well. What a rotten time to lose one of your 'girls'. Do hope you're feeling better soon. It might cheer you (and Monty!) up if you buy a couple more hens!
Redwing
If you don't want new hens then Monty will be fine alone. All of my show cockerels and breeding boys live alone at least some months of the year (they can see each other) and theyre fine. If you did want to introduce new hens then personally I would do it when the mums have fully recovered from their parenting stint
mimi5
Thanks all. Will leave him until his "girls" can re-join him. Then hoping to add any girls from my chicks once old enough. Oh please let there be some girls!!! Got to be 1 or 2 in amongst the 7 surely!?? Doctor says I can go home shortly. I had the most scary night/early hours really, with a tidal wave nose bleed. It went on for nearly 3 hours and ended up with hubby driving me to A&E and a 24 hour stay. Good job the teenagers had already been helping with chicks and knew what to do. Just really sad about Mandy Be nice to get home and check on them all!!!
Isabel
Sorry to hear you haven't been well Mimi. Hope you're at home now, feeling better but taking it easy. Sorry too that you lost a hen. How are all the chicks? I can't believe how big our two are now! I googled sexing Marans today and am fairly certain we have one of each. Girl has tail feathers, no sign of a comb and completely different feather colouring on her wings as opposed to boy (no tail feathers at all, distinct barring on wings and definite comb). Need to now find a nice Gold Laced Orpington around the same age to slip in at the right time (probably when Nigella leaves) as eldest son has wanted and been promised one for the last two years! Take care and take it easy. Isabel
