duchess
Hi there one of my 7 week old chicks is gaping quite a lot. Been like it for a couple of days now. She also looks a bit puffed up but is otherwise eating and drinking normally and the droppings appear to be normal. The other 5 chicks all seem fine. Any ideas what it could be? Surely she's too young to have gapeworm? What age should chicks first be wormed? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
Duncan08
Get some coxoid ASAP, see my post New Chicks, just a tip or two. I waited and it was too late, the dirty poos don't come until a few days into the infection. It is a really common infection and easy to treat if you do it quickly. duchess
Thanks Duncan. They are on growers pellets with ACS but I'll try and get some coxoid also.
Duncan08
Sorry, I was on my way out before, just to add. Coxoid is a strong drug that is harsh on the gut, in an ideal world you should have the droppings checked by a vet, you can even send them away but I am not entirely sure you have time for that, my poor girl went downhill within a couple of days. If you are going to self administer give the girls a probiotic during and after treatment to help them recover. Good luck.
Kirstie
I'm sorry about your chick, I have no idea if it is coccidiosis but if you do go down the route of coxoid I think you will need to feed them growers pellets without ACS as you can't give coxoid with ACS (hopefully someone who knows more will be on to either say yes that's right or no it's not?). Hope your chick improves
Redwing
There is nothing to indicate Cocci here Coxoid must never be given where feed with ACS is in use I'm ot sure what the gaping could be, is the chick panting? If panting it could simply be too warm, if not it could be a respiritory infection or a problem with the lungs
duchess
Thanks everyone for you're comments. I was unsure about giving coxoid if the rest of the chicks are fine. I think I'll consult a vet. She doesn't appear to be panting and doubt she's too warm as its been quite chilly the past few days. Droppings are normal and like I said she's still eating normally. What age would you first worm the chicks? But I think they're too young to have worms already. Hopefully I'm worrying about nothing, but it's my first hatch and would hate anything bad to happen to any if them!!

mimi5
So sorry to hear about your little one. I am also on my first hatch and sadly also lost a chick on day 3. But like you all the others going strong!!! Just keep an eye on your others, I had to treat mine as they had blood in their poo. Enjoy them.....don't they grow up fast!!!!! duchess
Thanks all for your kind words. Very sad but at least she's at peace now. All the other chicks are fine. And I'll be keeping a close eye on them. I've burnt all the shavings and given they're shed a thorough clean.
Redwing
It could be that the lungs didnt develop properly, nothing you could have done in that case I am sorry
duchess
It could be that the lungs didnt develop properly, nothing you could have done in that case I am sorry Thanks redwing, I didn't think it was cocci. In a way I'm relieved I don't have to see her suffer.
Duncan08
So sorry to hear your news Duchess, my girl gaped for a short while before the other symtoms kicked in, there are so many things to keep track of we will never know the best thing to do, even the vets don't always. Hope all your other girls are OK, mine seem to be doing fine now(fingers crossed) - brought them in out of this terrible weather and they are chirping in the dark on the dining room table at the moment.
