The Draughtsman's Contract

Recommended Posts

Just watched this film YET again and I still don't understand it  ! Having seen it about 10 times now I remain COMPLETELY confused! I know that Peter Greenaway can be rather obtuse but it really makes no sense to me - clearly far too subtle :? !

Its visually fantastic but I just cannot work out what is going on with the comissioning of the paintings - there is obviously something dodgy with the painter and the mistress of the house and who are the group of men who decide to blind the painter? Why does the maid hang she sheets out of different windows and what on earth is the statue up to? Is there any significance in the fact that the painter is painting Mr Talmund - who is Dutch  ?

Years ago, before children, we were into 17th century re-enactment and camped at Groombride Place, Kent, where the film was made and it is stunning but I do feel that either I am missing something vital or, maybe, there is nothing to miss and it is supposed to be 'arty  '!? After years of wrestling with it it would be great if someone could put me out of my misery :wall: !!!!!!

Can anyone enlighten me - the forum is my last hope! Over to you  !

That brings back memories!

I used to be really into Peter Greenaway films when I was a student. I never really got to the bottom of what they were about, just loved them for the visual feast that they were!

The music he used was always so atmospheric too 8)

I remember the film called 'A Z and two Noughts' (or something like that?!) being all about decay and being a little unsettling to watch though!! :anxious::lol:
