My elderly aunt taught me to crochet when I was a child but I haven't crocheted since my childhood.

 

For my birthday DD and the girls have bought me a set of crochet hooks and a book called 200 Crochet Blocks.

 

I am going to have a pracitce with some wool I have and see how it goes.

Thanks all I just have to master the stitches again. I have had a couple of goes but my tension is too tight I could not get the hook in to do the second row

 

I am away this weekend and next at archery tournamnets so I will take a hook and some wool with me and get some practice in when it is quiet.

I found that. I undo mine and do them looser. On subsequent rows it seems ok with your normal tension.

A good piece of advice I was given is to do your chain row using a hook one size larger than you will use for the main piece of work. It makes that first row so much easier!

I was amazed at how much of a difference it makes, yet you wouldn't know once the piece is finished.

 

Just wait til you have to do a magic ring...took me ages (and several different sets of instructions) to get my head around those

Some blocks don't start with a chain. You have to wind the yarn around your fingers a couple of times, do a chain then work into the loop of yarn you have made. You then pull on the loose end, the ring tightens and Bob's Your Uncle you have a lovely tight circle of stitches that act as your foundation row.

 

But seriously, don't panic about these yet...

 

And shout when you do want talking through it!

 

This technique is used a lot when crocheting Amigurumi toys etc.
