pixiewish
I'm not sure if its a breed thing or if there is a problem, but my orpington bantam is noticeably bald in the area near her ear. Got hubby to help me catch her this eve to have a good look (she us not a fan of being held) and it doesn't look particularly red or inflammed, nor any discharge from the ear and there is no sign of any mites or lice so i'm just not sure. Any advice appreciated. Edited July 3, 2012 by Guest
Redwing
Do you have a cockerel? they can cause that sort of damage or sometimes a hen will mount another one causing the same damage
pixiewish
All hens as far as i know, they are about 8 weeks. Do you think its feather pecking? I thought she was boss being biggest but maybe i'm wrong. If it is do i need to do anything?
CheekyPekins
I have an Orpington bantam and 2 Pekins and Moneypenny (Orp) is definitely the boss, being the biggest... Does she have a bald spot behind one ear only, or is it both?
pixiewish
Both ears and looks pretty much the same both sides size and location wise

CheekyPekins
a) she's BEAUTIFUL! b) my Orp's earlobes also look like this - but are redder (I have to point out that my Orp's breeder had to tell me they were her earlobes... ) so I don't think there's anything to worry about. But please bear in mind that I've owned chickens for an entire 2 weeks, so any advice from anyone with more knowledge (i.e pretty much anyone) should definitely trump what I've said... pixiewish
Thanks Cheekypekins. i did have a chat with someone at work today who is a long term chicken keeper and she said it did sound like it might be a breed thing.

pixiewish
Ahhh the joys of being a chicken newbie worrying about normal stuff. I obviously need to improve my google skills so I don't bother you all with inane questions Very relieved to know I was worrying about nothing though. CheekyPekins
Don't worry pixiewish - we all worry about normal stuff! I seem to be obsessed with whether my hens have normal poo... And the first dustbath sent me into a bit of a panic
