dance in the dark
So I was just out with my girls. I don't really know what happened, but over behind one of the eglus one of the chickens did a soft shelled egg. the others all dived on it, which they have never done with a softie before, and have eaten it. I didn't see which hen did it, but one of my girls now looks a bit , odd. She has parted he feathers as i she is about to do a big poo, and is walking around like this, I can't see any "straining" but there is definately some active "pulsating". I just picked her up and had a quick look, and it looks like there is some egg like residue around her vent. Not the normal moistness, but a viscous egg like substance. Is there a chance she just had a soft egg and is broke on its way out? I can't see and shell or anything, just the substance, Any ideas what I should do? dance in the dark
Ok, maybe I over reacted. I just gave it about 15 minutes, and had another look, her feathers and vent have gone back to normal now, and she has gone to bed, quick look at her vent and it has gone back to it's normal size and is clean. I think she must have laid the softie, and it broke. It must have been something odd to get my girls attention as they have never eaten a soft egg before. Has anyone else had something like this happen before?
Redwing
It sounds like a normal softie episode. I would keep an eye on the hen though as sometimes another softie follows which can make the hen very miserable for a few days
Plum
Agree with Redwing. I would bathe the egg of her bottom to prevent the others being tempted to peck. A bit of damp will soon dry this time of year
dance in the dark
Thanks for your help, like I say I think I just over reacted as I have never known any of my girls have a soft egg break, unless it was in a droppings tray. Although of course, since they went beserk and ate this one, they might normally clean up their evidence... Then it took longer for her to sort her feathers out, and sort out her vent than normal, but perhaps that was just me looking for something to worry about.
