dead hen = why??

Recommended Posts

Bought 3 POL pekins 2 weeks ago and bought them home. Today the girls got up and were pecking about. Noticed at lunchtime the smallest one was sitting still, eyes closed, wings drooped not looking good opening and shutting her beak. Put some water by her and went out. Came back a few hours later and she was dead. Yeterday she seemed fine - eating corn in the afternoon. She was the smallest and the lowest in the peaking order. But she wasnt being bullied - no blood on her, had wormed them and hen house brand new and have disinfected in.

Any ideas? could the others get it?

Chickens can be very good at hiding illness, they appear to be fine and then slip away very suddenly.

One of my pekins from my Easter hatch died suddenly, was fine in the afternoon but was dead in the run at bedtime. I had videoed them that day and looked back and she appeared fine on the video.

I would let the breeder know just in case.

I've had my pekins for nearly a year now. What a steep learning curve I've been on!!!!! They were poorly shortly after I got them (sneezing and really off colour!!) Thankfully after baytril-antibiotics they all recovered!! (Lost one of those orginals later after a mystery illness that baffalled the vet and I!!) I have lost 2 girls over time, through different things and it seems that sometimes there's very little you can do. :(

But I know with time am better at noticing odd or slight changes in behaviour. They as has been said will try to "act" normal, until they really can't. You need a sypathetic vet and a few things in the cupboard as a stand by!!!!! ("nutri-drops" by net-tex are a brilliant pick me up for chickens who aren't eating/off colour) Stress is a big factor and probably just getting your pekins could have been a factor, but I don't think there was much symptom wise for you to go on!!! Try not to worry and just keep an eye on the others. :D

If you need advice this is the most helpful place to come!!!!

Best wishes for happy chicken keeping!!!!!
