Minnie&Moose
I got 3 new hens yesterday. They seemed fine when I looked them over. However, this morning at least 2 of the 3 are sneezing (the bully & the bully's main target), and the bird getting the brunt of the 'bullying' had a bubbly eye when I checked her early this morning. Other than that they all look bright, they're feeding and drinking, and are amazingly friendly and easy to handle. They are on a separate part of the lawn to our existing hens and although they can see each other. My question is - should I monitor the new birds for 24 hours to see how they go or should I contact the breeder now and ask to return them, i.e. does the bubbly eye indicate it's likely to be mycoplasmosis or might it just be the stress of moving and a cold? As far as I know our existing birds are free of myco so it's not something I want to introduce if I can avoid it but am I being too anxious here? Tweety
No, you are right to be worried. I would contact the breeder - although the stress of the move might have something to do with it, the bubbly eye does sound like myco and I wouldn't want to take the risk. Egluntyne
I agree with Tweety. It sounds like Myco, and the stress of the move may have made a dormant problem come to the fore.
Minnie&Moose
Thanks Tweety and Egluntyne, I'll contact the breeder this morning.
Chucky Mama
I agree with the other 2 posters, make sure that you continue to keep them in quarantine.
Minnie&Moose
Well, Daphne, Dilys and Dolores are still with us - still sneezing intermittently but looking very perky. Had them checked over by my own vet to be on the safe side - he examined all 3 very carefully, said they looked like great little birds (tough I suspect is what he really means) and in good condition generally, but with some signs of a low grade minor respiratory infection, probably brought on by the stress of moving. So, at his recommendation we're monitoring them, keeping them well apart from the other birds, and will keep this up until they've been free of symptoms for at least 2 weeks (at the vet's suggestion). They are delightful little things so we're all pleased - today when I got home they were all 3 crammed into a small seed tray having a dust bath together, very nice to see . Tweety
Good idea to get them checked by the vet - at least you know what you are dealing with now, and I hope they make a full recovery very soon.
