To Roo or not to Roo?

Recommended Posts

Ok the bantie kingdom has been in uproar and they're driving me potty. Champion Evil Edna (full title for this) has taken a strong dislike of my plump little Mavis Cruet and Willo Longtail. She's been charging about in attack mode all morning, I thought she'd settle down once she'd got her egg out the way (not her favourite part of the day) but no she got worse. I've ended up taking her out on her own and putting her in the rabbit cage (If Mr Fox fancies a snack I won't be particularly upset I have to say.)

My question to experienced Roo owners is, would a fella stop all this nonsense and keep them in order?

Next question is how loud is a Mod Game boy? What methods do people use to muffle the early morning Doodle Dooing?

Blackbird alarm, seagull, egg announcement, dog barking loud.

I don't know about keeping the girls in order as my roo is a total wimp and doesn't even try mounting the girls as they protest so loudly it puts him off. He does look after them though and is very protective of his girls and shows them where the best bits of food are. As foer noise he is not too bad, he is fairly quiet TBH. As long as I shut the house door at night I can leave him shut in until 8. 30 ish and dont really hear him. Fingers crossed the neighbours are quite happy with him. He is a millefleur Barbu d Uccle and lives with his bantie girls. I think smaller cockerels do tend to be shrill rather than loud.

I don't think there is any guarantee that a boy will keep your naughty girls in order, i'm afraid! I have 3 gorgeous bantam boys, and they are all useless at stopping their hens squabbling but they do look after the girls and I love having them.

As for noise, I keep them in the eglu with the door closed until about 7.30am during the week, later at weekends, and my neighbours say they can't hear them. They do crow quite a lot during the day too, and can be quite loud once they get going.

Hi again daxigirl!

The reason I have my gorgeous Mr Monty is because my 3 pekin bantam girls were a nightmare!!!!! He has settled them down and is a real gent with them. If they are having a minor spat he stays out of it and of course there is still a pecking order. The other morning Molly (top girl) was giving Milly a hard time over nothing, so he gave her a sharp telling off and that was that!

Crowing that's a whole other matter!!! Not too bad, but Monty does go on!!! He also crows in the day when he's a happy chap, bless him! I didn't realise how early he crows until I was ill a few months back......4.30am on a summer sunny morning!!! Thankfully I had asked the neighbours both sides (we're detached) who were fine about me getting him and one side actually like to hear him!!!! He was a bit depressed a few months back (long story!!!) My neighbour called and asked if he was ok, as she hadn't heard him crowing!!!!

I wouldn't be without him.........shh he's actually my favourite!! :D

I have a lovely sweet 13 week old buff pekin bantam boy I hatched.......you can have him if you like! I wanted to keep him, but he's practising his crow and I worry 2 of them at it may be a tad much

daxigirl, sorry to digress, but I noticed that you have an araucana (have another post on here about them versus silkies, as I can get 2 of one OR the other............having trouble deciding!!) Would you recommend them?? Are they noisy? What about temperament and egg laying?? The big question....do they go broody?????? Molly my gold partridge is broody AGAIN for the 4th time this year.....give me strength  I even let her hatch!!!!!! (buff boy is one of her babies!)

Thanks and sorry to ramble!!

I may just take you up on that, what sort of fellas are they?

I'm going to get her a bumper bit thing so at least she can't pull out anymore feathers or draw blood. Poor little Mavis has a tiny scab on her face so I need to stop this. Evil is spending the day in the naughty quarters where she can see everyone but that's all (she's got her baseball  ). Peace has returned to the kingdom.
