Kelly2chooks
Hi, have only had my 2 chickens ten days so was delighted when one started laying 3 days after they arrived. We had 5 days of an egg, regular as clockwork, at about midday each day, then two days where she laid a dodgy egg with no shell, then today nothing at all. Is it normal for them to stop laying so soon? My gingernut hasn't even started yet! She doesn't seem I'll or anything, just wondered if anyone had any suggestions to explain why she had laid dodgy eggs them stopped. Am very new to this! gongladosh
Don't worry about it - if they're youngish girls who haven't been laying for long, then you'll get the occasional soft egg as things settle down. You may also get the odd double yolker. As the hens adjust to their new surroundings, they may stop laying for a week or two - the stress of moving can do this to hens. Once they're used to their new surroundings, they should start laying again.
good_egg
What are you feeding them and do they have access to grit. Could be something to do with a change in diet. Also are you sticking to treat limits (v hard when you first get)
Purplemaniacs
If they are POL to lay for a few days and then have a break or to lay softies is nothing to worry about. When I bought some hybrid POL all about the same age one didn't start to lay until months after the others but she has now out lived the others and at over 4 and a half still lays the odd egg. Kelly2chooks
Aww thanks so much for replies. After two days of not laying polly then laid a huge egg! Had another today too so I think it was just because she had only just started laying. The first proper eggs she laid were quite small and these are huge! Just waiting for Clara to start now, although her comb is quite a bit smaller so don't think she's quite ready. Kel xx
