Winter accommodation for Chickens

Recommended Posts

We purchased our first ever hens back in July, so we have as yet to experience winter with them.

The weather has been good since we have had them, and we have kept them on grass with their coop and electrified netting.

We are now thinking about their winter accommodation, and don't really know the best way to go, and was hoping to get some ideas on here .... Piccies would be great :)

Just a quick MUD WARNING!!!

How much room do they have, is it a static run etc? If it's static then I'd get ready for a bit of mud  , at least by their door, near to the gate / food etc. Rubber mats (the kind with holes in) are a good mud deterrent, as is harwood chip.

My 3 girls have a 4 x 5 (ish) metre run (no roof) which was soon a mud bath with the winter we've just had  . I've now converted to mainly woodchip and I'm over the moon with it  .

Food for thought maybe? Why not post a pic of your current set up and I'm sure the wonderful omleteer advice will soon come raining down
