Three new chickens today!

Recommended Posts

Yay! I finally got my three new chickens today (it was supposed to be two, but I just knew I would have to have three :!: ). I set out with the intention of getting two bovans nera and one white star. The problem was not being able to get all three in the same place. The bovans were more difficult to find and when I finally did find somewhere with plenty of bovans, of course they didn't have any white stars :!:

I went to The Barns Poultry Centre in Moggerhanger, which I had visited before, and liked the set up. I chose two bovans nera - one mostly black with a gold necklace and the other one with much much more gold on (in fact not very much black at all really - more brown - wonders if it is actually a bovans nera or not  ). Anyway, I went for looks and I thought the one with the mostly black and the gold necklace suited my chosen name of Mrs Beaky. The one with the lots of gold on it suits Bertha/Berta, and then of course there's Betsy, who turned out to be a really sweet little speckeldy with a sticky up tail

There was lots of shouting from Betty and Betty when I first got the new girls home; the new girls too were also very vocal. I put the new girls in the red eglu I bought off EBay a couple of weeks ago, and they set about getting used to their new surroundings. Within half an hour little Betsy had produced a little egg :!: , so I was very pleased with that as you can imagine (quite small compared to the nice big ones Betty and Bessie have been laying this year.

All quiet right now, although Mrs Beaky has been a bit shouty on and off. Looking forward to them all settling in and the intros being sorted out. So far so good, but I presume it will be a while before they are all living together happily.

Will post pics soon, but meantime am enjoying just watching them all (even better I am off work for the rest of the week :D ).

It is difficult isn't it getting different colours from the same place let alone different breeds. I heard someone on the radio recently being very sarky about 'back garden keepers who don't care about breed standards but just want different birds so they can name them'. Well that's me alright.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures. Sounds like Mrs Beaky is living up to her name
