balti
Can anyone tell me the average age for a chicken. I remember we got ours October and they started laying December-ish, We had them at least 2 years in our old house and we are 3 years this month in new house. I still have 2 of these original chickens left. This is pretty old eh?

Looney
My eldest, Doris, is 6 years and 3 months. She is one of my original Omlet girls, the friend she arrived with lived about 3 years. I thought Doris was fully retired but I caught her in the act of laying an egg the other day!
zakjon-98
Wow that's a great age to be laying! Well done Doris
balti
I always thought old birds stop laying - my 2 oldies are nearly 6 im sure and still laying everyday = they cant be hybrids. Never knew what they were when i got them!
Looney
Doris is definitely a hybrid. I doubt she lays very often, I was absolutely convinced she had stopped laying completely! She is suffering from old lady syndrome and grew spurs and a cockerel-type comb about a year or so ago! She is my son's favourite chicken (well, she was until she started bullying Zena as per my other thread on here ) so I hope she lives a bit longer yet!
