Chicken limping for no obvious reason. Ideas?

Recommended Posts

One of my hens, Jane, has suddenly taken on a bit of a limp. I noticed it two mornings ago when she was a bit reluctant to make the hop out the hen house door into the run. And when she finally did, I could see her trying to put as little weight on the limping foot as possible.

I checked her feet and the soles of her feet but there didn't appear to be anything. No signs of bumblefoot, or gout, or anything. I compared her feet to the other hens and they looked identical. No obvious difference whatsoever.

Any idea what it could be? Any animal that is limping is obviously in discomfort. Could it be a minuscule thorn or something like that?

Any ideas?

Hi

She could have hurt herself from jumping or landing awkward.

Have you felt from her toes right up to the top of her leg. It might just be muscular and will right itself.

One of mine showed these symptoms and when I picked her up and felt all up her leg she did appreciate it so I masssaged it for a while.

The two questions my vet asked when we had a limpet were 1) is she laying and 2) how is she limping - dragging foot, curling toes or walking on tip toes etc. Might help to answer.

She is about 3 ½ years old, and she is a hybrid so I would imagine she isn't laying much

As for the type of limping, I suppose the closest description would be dragging her foot

See I asked that question but don't actually know the outcome other than for how Viv was limping. I think the vets comment to my hubby was that the dragging was more likely to be something to do with nerves or the base of her foot - might be worth checking her foot for warmth compared to the other one and (horrible as it sounds) giving her toe a bit of a pinch with a finger nail to see if she reacts. If she is still limping might be sensible to take her to vet. Has she got better since you noticed?
