What are TMPS tablets?

Recommended Posts

Last week I found out one of my poorly girls has coccidia (see my previous thread for the history) so I am treating all 5 hens.

I was given some tablets today and have tried looking them up but not sure what they are - do they have a different name? It only says TMPS on the label. I am not going to eat the eggs whilst the chooks are on these meds but how long after treatment do you recommend I continue doing this?

I ended up giving the tablets to the chooks by disolving each dose in a syringe - wish I did this first because I thought 'I will use a grape to entice them to eat it all up!' and did they? NO! They were not amused that I tried to trick them. And I am 5 doses down...sigh!

I would guess at trimethoprim sulfa..... This is a broad spectrum antibiotic and not a specific coccidiosis treatment but looks like it would be applicable. As all antibiotics I would guess not tested on layers therefore they would advise 28 days withdrawal, but imagine it will act very similarly to baytril in mechanism so a week? Perhaps ask the vet? Would definitely invest in a good tonic for after broad spectrum antibiotic and also something to put the friendly bacteria back (probiotic yoghurt or a powder). Hope they perk up soon. Love the fact they turned their nose up at grapes! My neighbours dissolve a tiny bit and soak bread in it if that is less traumatic than using syringe.

Thank you very much good egg and DM!

The syringing works at the moment and I wouldn't trust wasting more tablets on bread - my chooks are so so fussy! They say chickens eat anything - mine don't lol! Going to try some yoghurt tonight and they have life guard in their water now :)

Appreciate the information :)
