Recommended Posts

Hi

Im looking for advise if possible, noticed one of my columbines hobbling tonight when i got home form workand checked its feet and noticed this on its left foot that its hobbling on it still anting to walk about and it will run round for grapes. Im not sure if its bumblefoot but they say it can be swollem and get a black scab it doesnt seem that bad when i have looked at images on google unless this is how it starts.

Any advise on what it is and treating it would be greatful thank you.

Certainly looks like she has damaged it somehow. I would get that cleaned up and some antiseptic spray in it as a starter, all the stuff they s"Ooops, word censored!"e in then there is a strong risk of infection. I think it looks a bit like the bumble pics I have seen but never experienced myself.

It does look a little like bumble foot or could develop into it. Maybe try to bathe it with diluted tea tree oil as it is naturally antiseptic. I have heard somewhere that some chickens are allergic to this, however, I have never had this problem with mine. Also, maybe try wrapping it with some sort of cloth like plaster to keep it clean and help reduce infection. Hope she gets better soon! :)

Agree with surf-space

Looks like you have found it early. At the first sign of redness or heat I would take to the vet for antibiotics.

In the meantime I would wash her foot in salt solution and apply an antiseptic, maybe teatree cream or vet powder. Make sure the foot is dry (you can use a hair dryer) then tape around her foot to keep any dirt out. She may peck it off and you can replace but should heal ok. It's worked with mine who got a cut on her pad :D

If you can clean the run so she's on fresh bedding and wash the roosting bars it'll reduce the chances of infection :?
