Very sadly today we lost Tikka, who since a prolapse in August, has been fighting the odds then an infection despite antibiotics from the vets.

She laid a number of eggs without any shells at all in the last few weeks despite, seaweed, grit, clacium etc in her food, it seem that it was just a bit more effort than she had left in her.

This prompted me to do a deep clean of the 'Go' oit's all clean and any bacteria she had isn't passed onto the others. And scoop out all the old wood chip from the run (as the shell-less eggs where often outside).

This has left me wondering what is the best thing to put on the run floor over the winter. The girls usually have woodchip, but this is now all in the bin (literally covered in muck). Do i replace with more woodchip over winter (which is really expensive at the moment) so i put a little straw down (like the farm where we get our girls from) and means i can scoop it out more regularly, or do you fab chicken peeps have a bett sugestion for me?

I've put some corragated plastic over the run today so hopefully this will halp keep whatever i put in the run dry!

Suggestions please.....!

Sorry to hear that you lost Tikka, always hard to lose a girlie :(

I use Hemcore in my run it's great stuff and tends to just soak up the poop, I put a decent layer down and replace the whole lot every 6-8 weeks, I move the Eglu and run, scrub the slabs clean and rinse them and then sprinkle Stalosan F down when they're dry, then put everything back and refill with Hemcore. I also top up the Hemcore in between big clean outs and remove any very soiled looking bits, I don't have to do it very often though :D

I had been using easibed (ANH recommended) but have just today swapped to easibed and nedz (rape straw) mix which seems popular with the girls but yet to confirm how it copes with weather. I have cube with extension and clear cover over one side and top - easibed has done very well!

investigations into cost effective hemcore and esibed underway. Not sure how water proof the run will be, hopefully it will be good!

Hate losing a girl, always feels like it's my fault. We'll be getting another girl to keep the balance of 3, unless my head gets turned and we somehow end up with an extra girl smuggled back from the farm!

i have just done a big clean out for the winter in the WIR i clean the the classic out once a week and poo pick on a daily basis (ocd) but this time i gutted the WIR everything came out old bedding, table, ladder, bridge, dust bath the lot cleaned the classic as usual and mixed a very weak solution of jeyes fluid (65ml to 5 litres of water) put in the sprayer and give the run and all its contents a good wash down with it the run floor is slabbed so waited for it all to dry out (lovely weather this sunday in leeds) and then returned all its contents but used BEDMAX for the floor of the WIR for the first time thought i would give it a go from RAPPORT 2 of the girls did not like it and jumped straight onto the bridge and refused to come down their bellies got the better of them not so keen on BEDMAX cant seem to find the poo on a daily basis so went out and got a bale of RAPPORT and covered it over the top the girls made a right mess of their newly cleaned run and have mixed both the products together very well and i am now impressed with the result i will use this combination again :D:D:D:D
