I was against retractable leads but.......

Recommended Posts

after seeing my aunts tape one a month or so ago (I only thought there were the wire ones) we bought one at the weekend and I have to say walking Neela has been lovely! She does go a bit mental spaniel about once a walk - today due to the wind blowing the leaves  But I find it gives her space to roam and smell what she'd like to and then if I need her close I can do it so easily. I have also been able to practise recall safely and she will walk by my side even though all the brakes are off :D My only gripe is I worry it could be pulled out of my hand easier than the leather leash I have as I can loop that round my wrist and hold it in my hand and feel like she can't get anywhere. I think I will need to get some tennis racket tape and see if that helps.

I honestly think that used sensibly, they do have their place. I use one with Tango when she is being a pain in the butt, bogging off and not listening to me. I can stick her on the Flexi until she has calmed down a bit, but she can still have a mooch about and a sniff (but not disappear like a little dot over the horizon :lol: ).

As with all tools, there are people with zero common sense who don't use them safely. But, for me a retractable lead does come in handy sometimes.

I have one of these and find it very useful as I walk my dog on a route by a main road and it means that he can have a sniff around but not get too close. Its also been good when we have been camping and we had to tie him up for a while when we can't keep an eye on him when he was a puppy but he can still have a bit of a walk around. I have had it pulled out my hand a couple of time though when he has seen a bird and goes to chase it but this was more me not paying attention and not holding the lead tight enough!

Yes too many people out there letting their dogs wander in the road while they are busy with their phones/ipod etc.

I can see their use in a park setting where you don't want to risk letting the dog completely off the lead but want them to have a good run. I wouldn't risk it with my girl - I can imagine getting tangled in a tree.
