With hybrids I would say 3 possibly 4 at a push if they spent most of their time free ranging and had things to keep them occupied. With bantams I would say 5 or maybe 6 if they were very small like serama and had lots of free range time. I don't think you could keep chickens permanently in that space unless it was a pair or trio of bantams. What are you thinking of getting?

We have two hybrids in a classic with an extended run, which we kind of got by accident as it was second-hand.

I would certainly keep no more than three [hybrids] and am really glad the girlies have the extra space. Ours is on a permanent site on deep woodchip. They are very, very industrious about rearranging it and digging surprisingly big holes, any more of them in there and they'd be in Australia by now

We let them out to F-R in our reasonably large garden pretty much every day, sometimes just for half an hour, sometimes for hours if the weather is good and we are gardening etc.

They also get stuff like corn on the cob and hanging treats for added amusement. Mostly mine, cause I love watching them

I have an eglu classic which sits on a table in a run which is 9 x 6 x 6 the chooks spend most of their days free ranging in the garden and seem happy and healthy. My hens are ex-batts and as a total newbie when I went to get them I was asked how many I wanted - I said I thought the maximum for the classic was 4 which was agreed - but when I went to pick them up they guy asked if I could take one more and said, "You can get 5 in there, no problem". So I have five ex-batts in my classic. When they go to bed they squash up together so much it looks as though there would be room for another 5 in there - but they seem to like it. We had the inevitable issues with the pecking order as they settled down but now for the most part (and I am touching wood here) things seem fine now. I recognise it may not be ideal to have the 5 in there but the way I look at it is that there are 5 spoilt hens with a lovely life now and the slight issues with the nest box is a small price to pay, especially when you consider what and where they came from AND that they are outside most of their waking hours (although in winter they will spend more time in their run) due to the lack of daylight and my working hours coupled with the need to keep them safe.

I am NOT saying this is what anyone else should do - but just that it seems to be working for Funky, Henrietta, Noodle, Nugget and Dumpling but I am looking for a cube when I can find one nearby that's affordable!
