Hope it's ok to post this query here ? I know a lot of omleteers have dogs .

Last night we acquired a nearly 12wk yorkie Russell pup who had to be rehomed. Concerned he may pick up disease from them because his second vaccs which are on Tuesday . Currently he only allowed in courtyard to do his business but not in garden where the girls are. Will we be tramping germs back and forth?

Also any advice on careful intros would be appreciated . Especially because of his breed !

Don't worry about letting your puppy have contact with the chooks - chickens cannot pass on disease to dogs, the diseases that pups are vaccinated against are passed from dog to dog.

The earlier you let your pup meet the chooks, the better I would have thought. Perhaps keep him on a lead at first so he cannot chase the chooks. Give him lots of fuss, a game or a treat when he ignores the chooks so he learns that you/other things are more interesting than the hens.

Our next door neighbour has a Jack Russell who they have had from a pup and she is 100% with the hens, including being in the garden with them whilst they are free ranging, so it is perfectly possible.

Good luck - and make sure you post some photos of your new puppy!

As he's a pup, he stands a great deal of success, especially as the hens can show him who is boss now

Careful introductions are wise, take it slowly and easily with him on a lead first.

When we had our hens, our terrier was already 12 years old, at first he barked and barked and barked.... But it did get to the point that he could be out in the garden alone when the girls were in their runs or could be out on a lead wit us... We didn't trust him off the lead with the girls. Sadly, he died aged 16 last year.

That said, next door have a JRT only a couple of years younger than our Henry was.... He used to break into the garden and was marvellous with the hens. His break in route has now been fixed but I would trust Rodney with the hens :D

No two dogs are ever the same, but starting young is the best way forward.

Hi :D

I've just found my post - I thought the moderators had removed it all together because I'd originally posted in the Chicken section! I've never explored this part of the forum before.

So sorry for the late reply, I really do appreciate your replies. He is adorable and incredibly naughty

I will post a pic later on. We have been taking him into the garden everyday (in our arms) and he has also been on one side of the gate and the chooks on the other. He gets very excited but is calmer for longer each time (if that makes sense!).
