Luvachicken Posted October 20, 2012 Share Posted October 20, 2012 I had to take Queenie to the vets today as she has a bad cough and cold. It only seemed to start this morning. The vet decided against the usual Baytril and used Tylan powder instead - as well as giving her an injection of it today, liquid of course. She had a bit of bother working out the correct dose. Queenie weighed 800 and something gms . They measured me out a teaspoonful which they said was equivalent to 5g. They then said I would have to split that into 5 equalish portions to mix into 1/2 litre of water for each day. Have they worked it out correctly ? I got a bit bamboozled by all the maths and couldn't work out what they were trying to do. Is she meant to drink the whole 1/2 litre in a day ? mimi5 Posted October 20, 2012 Share Posted October 20, 2012 Hi there Luvachicken My best guess is that like when you make up aprivo in water it needs to be fresh everyday and I guess like when worming the chicken will dose itself by taking what it needs for it's body size. But it's only a guess!! I hope Queenie feels better soon!!! She had just started laying hadn't she? One of my babies got a bad cold and cough a few weeks back and had a week of baytril. She's fine now, but one of my other babies (I say babies 25 weeks old now!!) has a bit of a runny bottom so I'm worming all of my gang. They are very sweet little eggs and she even layed one this morning even though she was feeling a bit peaky. I hope this Tylan stuff does the trick and I hope they've worked it out correctly. My vet only ever seems to prescribe baytril as it's a broad antibiotic. Is she separate from your other girls? Atleast you don't have to do the syringe battle!! No eggs yet from my babies...so probably sometime early next year. Just had what I think will be my last 2 eggs, dippy today...yummy!!! Keep us posted on Queenie. She never said anything about treating the whole flock What about the older 2 who have been the other side of omlet wire door so far, do they need it too ? It's a good job I have hubby who is good at maths. We looked up Tylan on their own site and it explained exactly the measurements and how to give it. It said you could use one mixture for upto 3 days. We have already split the spoonful into 10 little portions to put in 1 litre of water. We decided we will make a new amount every other day. If anyone was spying on us we looked a bit suspicious measuring out these tiny amounts with a teeny spoon onto our 10 pieces of foil and then folding them up. She also told me there was no egg withdrawal, but the instructions on the Tylan site says you should withdraw the eggs. Queenie is in our lounge at the moment. I gave the other 3 their bedtime cuddle and Queenie had hers later and didn't have to share my lap space or cuddles. She had a good look round our lounge. She has drunk some of the water with the stuff in it, but how do I know if it's enough ? The other chicks had the left over water, but then I worried because she worked out the amount needed for a chicken based on Queenie's size, and my 2 smaller chicks obviously don't weigh the same. I'm worming mine at the mo.....feel SO bad they haven't been out of the cube run since fri......they keep looking at me pleedingly! I think I will take her back, I wish the vet had listened when I said I wanted medicine to put in the beak And I'm sure I saw a bit of red in her poo. Do they sometimes have bits of red ? And she layed another tiny egg today bless her. I need her better soon because I wanted to use 1/2 term to put all of them in together, and obviously I can't do that if she is poorly, and I don't really want to wait til the Christmas hols. Penny one of my babies was having runny poos and I'd seen some red in poos in the cube trays. But they do shed their gut lining and it looks a kind of orange/red, my babies went through a faze of this. Have you wormed her recently? My babies are being wormed for the 1st time. They can be let out on sat!! Just as the weather is supposed to turn colder....but maybe drier??? But yes if in doubt I'd go back to your vet. I was hoping to do that when they all go in together. Do you think it matters the 2 bigger girls were wormed just a couple of moths ago - not quite the 3 mths gap ? Another complicating factor was that my adults were moulting and as this is hard on their systems I hadn't wanted to worm until nov. But my hand was forced and it is only a couple of weeks earlier than I planned. Prehaps get your vets thoughts tomorrow?? They are a worry aren't they?? Let us know how you get on. I have a digital scale the 100g ones cost a tenner from fleabay accurate enough for 10 mg doses. When people ask what I use them for and say drugs that's a conversation stopper Chickens/layers, replacement pullets 500mg or (.5g if you prefer) per litre as a treatment for Mycoplasma 58-72 hrs medication Chickens/ layers, replacement pullets.150mg per litre for the treatment of Necrotic Enteritis. 5 days medication. Meat withdrawal I day, egg withdrawal zero days. It's one of those treatments, as it given in their water unless you get it wrong by getting the decimal point in the wrong place on the heavy side you won't do any harm. First time I used it the vet was struggling, in the end if you go 1g Tylan to 2 litres of water you've cracked it I think the egg withdrawal is a ass covering exercise for commercial flocks. Tonight Queenie did appear to sneeze/cough less, but then as soon as I think she seems better she starts again. I think I will keep her appointment though, as I'd rather know she is definitely on the mend. She looked completely different to yesterday afternoon. She'd been busy eating and drinking whilst I was at work and whilst I ate lunch she didn't make any coughing or sneezing and hardly any snuffling noises. You'll probably never know how she got it, but it's good that you were able to isolate her quickly and it would seem stopped the others getting it. I think it's shared drinkers that seem to spread colds, once one has picked one up. Garlic in the water drinker is supposed to help and I think apple cider vinegar is suppose to help gut flora and general health/condition. The 2 younger chicks were a bit mean to her for a while, so I hope they are nice to her tomorrow.
