Have just bought a cockerel!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I've just bought 3 pekin girls and 1 pekin boy which are all 6 weeks old :D

The only problem is that whilst I have a big garden I do live in a residential area. The seller said that pekin bantam cockerels are rather placid and don't make much noise, can anyone confirm if this is true? I really want to keep him but equally do not want to fall out with my neighbours :anxious:

Hi there!

I have a lovely pekin cockerel who I've had nearly a year now. He is 15 months old now and while his crow isn't too loud he does go on and on at times!!! The other sunny morning, I counted he did 15 "doodle doos" in a row!!! Bless him!:roll: Also through the summer he would begin to crow at 4.30am!

I did ask both neighbours either side before getting him and they were fine about it. Although speaking with a neighbour a few doors down the other day she said they weren't impressed at 1st.... but now they like to hear him....Phew!!

Just a couple more things, did you pay for your cockerel? Mine was free with my 3 girls and also if he is related to the girls, breeding from them won't be a good idea. Lastly, hand feed him and handle him so he becomes tame, my Monty is my favourite (shh don't tell my girls! )

Hope you enjoy your pekins!!! :D:D

Hello mimi5 - thanks for your reply :D

In answer to your questions I did pay for him £15 the same price as the females - is it normal practice to give them away for free? Will also ring up now to see if they are related. I was originally only supposed to purchase girls but then got a bit carried away and for some reason decided on getting a cockerel too so completely forgot to ask if they were related.

All cockerels make noise but a pekin shouldn't be too bad. Once he starts crowing you will probably have to ask your neighbours if you feel it could be a problem. Cockerels are hardly ever as expensive as hens and are often free as the breeder usually would cull them so in a way your are kind of doing them a favour by having one. Hope he is not too loud for you :D

We got given a cockerel who had lived as a pair, and we were told it was a mute :liar: and never made a noise in its life (a light sussex) . We took it home and it lasted 20 minutes!! It cock a doodle dooed every 10 seconds non stop for 20 minutes and the hens did nothing but scream!!! It promptly got put back in its box and taken back from whence it came!! :notalk:

I asked if you paid for your boy as usually breeders are happy to give you a cockerel to get them a home!!!! I breed this summer and got 4 lovely boys and 3 girls!!!! Thankfully I managed to get homes for all the boys and I gave them away free to good homes and they are all doing well!

My Mr Monty is a bit of a stud .....I had 100% hatch rate and a friend I gave 6 eggs to also had 100%!!!! But I won't hatch again as re-homing the boys was stressful and I know I'm lucky as people I know from the "perfect pekin" website haven't been so lucky. One of them has 8 cockerels to re-home from her hatches and hasn't had any luck!!! :( Had really wanted to keep my buff boy, but didn't want to push my luck withthe neighbours from 2 cockerels and the "doodle doo" competitions!!!!

What colours did you get??

Thanks so much all for your replies. Wondering if I've done the right thing but hopefully he's not too noisy :D

mimi5 - spoke to the breeder and he said that the cockerel and hens are related but the parents from who they were bred aren't so apparently we can breed but he has recommended that any new brothers and sisters are not allowed to breed. Does this sound right to you?

Unless the cockerel is from good stock £15 was a lot to pay

It doesnt matter at all if he is related to the females, if you choose to breed this will give you more predictable results in the offspring which is good. Most top breeders dont bring in new blood if they can help it and some of those wont have bought any new birds in to the flock in decades. Related stock isnt really a problem in chickens

Once you have your first youngesters from them try to carry on breeding across the generations so young females to the original cock bird and young males to the original females

in answer to your first question Pekin cockerels can be noisy yes, they suffer from 'little man' syndrome usually and are pretty loud and proud crowers

Thanks Redwing that answers a question that I was going to post as I had hoped to breed from Tumble but he would probably be related to any girl mini silkies from my latest hatch.

The little Pekin boy I hatched at Easter was quite loud, but he did compete with the Colonel a Araucana boy

Gallinas I hope your boy is not too loud :D
