counturchickens
Further to my previous post, we've collected 3 rescue hens this weekend. One is particularly 'oven ready' with only her wing feathers. Saw countryfile last night, and apparently there is some arctic weather coming this weekend. I'm not worried they will be cold at night, as they will be snuggled up together, but poor birdie seems to be a bit shivery during the day. Does anyone have any suggestions? They are in an omlet wir, which is partially covered so there are dry areas. Am I worrying too much?
smartrus
I read an article in a devon paper about just this problem. A lady at A la Ronde, has knitted vests for her little ex batts! Quirky and a bit funny, but it did the trick. Do you know a knitting club!??
counturchickens
Thanks. I have seen hen jumpers, however apparently they're not recommended in case they get their claws stuck. I have seen some fleece lined poultry saddles though should I get some? If anyone remembers 'angel' from this forum, birdie is just like her! dancing cloud
Would that be my little naked Angel from this post? http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=78524&hilit=+angel Now fully feathered, free for over a year and very much enjoying being top hen ! As cheeky a chook as you could ever wish to meet Although the knitted coats look cute, I've never used them as they stay wet if they get wet, can stretch and trap feet or get caught on shrubbery, and new quills can get caught up as well. The fleece poultry saddles look much more practical as they won't stretch and look fairly easy to get on and off. If Birdie can make do without a jacket, her feathers will come through more quickly, so you may want to wrap her up only when it's very cold and expose her to the elements when it's warmer. Keep us posted as to how you and Birdie get on and here's hoping for warmish weather till she's better covered!
counturchickens
Thanks dancing cloud. I wouldn't normally worry, but she is very like your angel. I will splash out on the fleece lined saddle for the cold days. I am so glad angel is going strong, hopefully it will be good news story for birdie too!
