newcountrygirl
My Polish frizzle - Chicken Little has mud all over her crest. I cant work out how she is doing it. I thought it was because she was dipping her head into the glug getting a drink then pecking around on the floor of the run so I changed to a shallow water drinker and raised it slightly off the ground. The other day she looked so bad I brought her inside, washed all the mud out, combed it then gave her a blow dry. Two days later she is as bad again - any advice welcome
Chortle Chook
Sorry, no advice, but lots of comiseration as I am in the same boat with one of my Polish gals. One (my gold laced one) is as clean as clean could be but my white, well cream, one is such a grub. Like you I have a shallow dish raised up on some tiles for their drinking water but that has made little difference. It's a puzzle
newcountrygirl
It is Shabby Chick I really cant work out how it is happening. Guess I will just have to resort to giving her frequent wash and blow dry's. At least she seemed to enjoy them!!
Chortle Chook
I've been gently squeezing the head feathers in a paper kitchen towel each evening at bedtime. This is not as good as a wash by any means but it does seem to help a little. I think my Dandy (was thought to be a girl but is definitely now a boy ) is getting his head feathers so dirty because of pecking around at the base of plants in my garden. He gets so enthusiastic about worms that by the time he has plunged his greedy little beak into the soil a few times the feathers around his face look very wet and grimy giving him the overall appearance of a punk rocker who has had a rough night out. Great description My silly Silkies drink the raindrops from some of the bars of the WIR that aren't covered with clear tarps, so they end up looking ridiculous as well
Chortle Chook
Yes, I have a silkie whose head regularly looks like a pin cushion The others are all 'good little bunnies'
newcountrygirl
If I could work out how to get photos on here I would put some on - but I have tried a few times without success.! Guess I am a technophobe - or just plain daft!
Pimbbj
Yes my White Silkie looks like she has a black wig on. The ginger silkie is fine. I want to wash her but haven't been brave enough yet. What do you use - warm water and baby shampoo?

I think it has something to do with the feather obstructing her vision. Well I have these disposable pet bath cloths that are non-toxic simular to the cloths you use when changing a baby, but their made for pets. You might want to ask your vet if this is ok, but I used these cloths on my dogs, cats, and hens and never had anyone get sick yet. Hope this helps. Pimbbj
I didnt think that a wipe would be wet enough to take it off. Of course I will have to catch her too. Always a problem
Chortle Chook
mindychick that is brilliant. I'm off to get some with sudden visions of neat, clean Polands. Many thanks

Always a problem They are actually quite damp, but if they are really messy, then I just get they a little damp with some warm water. Good luck catching her. I know the feeling well. mindychick
mindychick that is brilliant. I'm off to get some with sudden visions of neat, clean Polands. Many thanks You are very welcome. Just make sure they are "Non Toxic" wipes. I asked my vet and he said as long as they are natural and/or non toxic it should be ok. I also contacted the company to get their opinion, and they said there was nothing in their product that would make any animal sick if ingested. That was what I was worried about and if there was any chemicals in it too. Good luck and hope it works.
newcountrygirl
I used dog shampoo and warm water. Made sure I rinsed it off well. Tried just the warm water and it didnt shift it. Trouble is I have done it twice now and given her a blow dry. Now every time I go into the run she thinks shes having a hairdo and comes running over to be picked up!
