newcountrygirl Posted October 23, 2012 Share Posted October 23, 2012 My Polish frizzle - Chicken Little has mud all over her crest. I cant work out how she is doing it. I thought it was because she was dipping her head into the glug getting a drink then pecking around on the floor of the run so I changed to a shallow water drinker and raised it slightly off the ground. The other day she looked so bad I brought her inside, washed all the mud out, combed it then gave her a blow dry. One (my gold laced one) is as clean as clean could be but my white, well cream, one is such a grub. Chortle Chook Posted October 24, 2012 Share Posted October 24, 2012 I've been gently squeezing the head feathers in a paper kitchen towel each evening at bedtime. This is not as good as a wash by any means but it does seem to help a little. I think my Dandy (was thought to be a girl but is definitely now a boy ) is getting his head feathers so dirty because of pecking around at the base of plants in my garden. He gets so enthusiastic about worms that by the time he has plunged his greedy little beak into the soil a few times the feathers around his face look very wet and grimy giving him the overall appearance of a punk rocker who has had a rough night out. Two days later she is as bad again - any advice welcome I have one buff lace polish hen (Chickalinda), and she gets very dirty when rolling in her dust bath. More so then my other hens. I think it has something to do with the feather obstructing her vision. Well I have these disposable pet bath cloths that are non-toxic simular to the cloths you use when changing a baby, but their made for pets. You might want to ask your vet if this is ok, but I used these cloths on my dogs, cats, and hens and never had anyone get sick yet. Hope this helps. Always a problem They are actually quite damp, but if they are really messy, then I just get they a little damp with some warm water. Good luck catching her. I know the feeling well. Just make sure they are "Non Toxic" wipes. I asked my vet and he said as long as they are natural and/or non toxic it should be ok. I also contacted the company to get their opinion, and they said there was nothing in their product that would make any animal sick if ingested. Trouble is I have done it twice now and given her a blow dry. Now every time I go into the run she thinks shes having a hairdo and comes running over to be picked up!
