Does anyone use wood chips instead of hemcore/ aubiose and the like in a large covered walk in run on earth. If so how do you keep it clean. Can you hose it down. Do the chickens like it. Thanks

I do I rake it and sprinkle it with stalosan once a week, that's it. The girls love it...BUT I only have three big girls - with more i guess it might be a bit messier?

Thanks super kitty. How long does the stuff last when you do that. Does it absorb the poo. I use hemcore and that does absorb it so I change it about every four months.

Another alterntaive is the deep litter method with dust extracted wood shavings. I use that and we only do a full clean out rarely. Poo just seems to disappear and I regularly chuck stalosan in. Mines on a soli bed though rather than slabs.

Are hemcore and aubiose chopped bits for want of a better description? If so shavings are different. I use Bedmax as that's what the feed place I go to has in. Chickens love scratching around in it and as it breaks down they love dustbathing in it as well. When we top it up I think we usually use 3 bags. Think it's about a foot deep then

Same here I've just replaced it after a year...although I don't think I'll leave it quite as long next time
