Lynn
PLEASE HELP!!!! Why are our chickens so noisey - it is stressing me out. The girls pace their run and sqawk until we let them out and when they do come out and continue for quite some time, and it is loud - and of course, we only get to hear them at the weekend - what must it be like during the week when we're at work and they're in the run all day? It wouldn't be so bad if it was just us, but we live on a new development and have neighbours to the left of us...and now in the warmer weather everyone has their windowns open during the night, so noise first thing in the morning can be a big issue. Do you have any advice - we are seriously thinking of selling the Eglu and girls because of the noise issue and we really don't want to do that. Nany thanks. Edit- Buffie , Just popped this into chickens for you
starboyhull
Hi Lynn, This was discussed a few days ago (I will try and find the thread).......Do they squawk before you get up or only once they have seen you????? Ours started this when we let them out at a set time everyday, now we let them out at different times and this seems to have calmed them down, they seem to play on people giving them attention.......NO attentention = no squawking well that worked very well with ours, although it is annoying until they give up........You may find that they make no noise while you are not home as they know your not there to give them the attention...... Lynn
Thanks, I found the thread. The girls are usually let out of the Eglu Mon-Fri at 5am before we go to work and they don't come out of their run until we get hom from work around 8pm. Yesterday morning I was at home and my husband let the girls out at the usual time and as I was at home I had a lay in. I was woken up at 7am by loud squawks - this was because one of them was laying an egg - but my goodness - how loud!! This morning however, I let them out of the Eglu at 7am into the run and they just wouldn't shut-up. After 10mins I let them out of the run to free-range as the neighbour's windows were open - and their boys sleep in the back bedrooms. (Our neighbours are very good at complaining). starboyhull
Im not sure on other peoples opinion on this but I do think they know our routine, as in it is the weekend and we are let out earlier.......It might be worth letting them out of the eglu at the normal time and just holding off from letting them out of the run......Totally ignore them, no treats no attention (like you would with a naughty child or in our case our dogs lol) just to see if it works, I know its hard when they wont shut up but I do think it will work..... We have neighbours that are very good at moaning and complaining too, the dogs bark, the hedge is too big, the car is in the wrong place on the road, you name it ours will dream it up lol I just smile and walk away now, which I think gets to them even more Luckily they either dont know about the girls or havent heard thm yet........Or just want free eggs

Couperman
Ours do that as well although I have to say it isn't that loud. We are working on the reward good behaviour, ignore bad behaviour type thing. It doesn't work...............yet. We make a point of never letting them out unless they are quiet, needless to say they don't get out much! but hopefully they will realise that squawking just prolongs their time in the run. That beady eyed stare does't cut it with me either, I can walk past KFC and outstare the Colonel and he has a mean beady stare. I will break their morale eventually and they will obey! (the hens are thinking exactly the same!) You tend to worry more about chicken noise pollution more than any other. A dog barking doesn't have the same impact and that would be louder. It's just because it's a new noise that doesn't fit in with what is considered normal background noise. Kev.
chelsea
Noisy chook owner here too Ella is bossy, dominant and loud, she wants her own way - but she aint gonna get it! We cover our eglu with dark tarpaulin every night when we shut the eglu door - we have to shut the eglu door as otherwise my girls would be out in the run at gawd knows what hour waking up our whole village! We are in control of our hens and not them in control of us !! We let them out from 6.30-7am every morning and if we want a lie in on the weekend we let them out of the eglu a bit later, they are fine in there as most mornings they are busy laying eggs early anyway. We have found the cover over the top of the eglu a godsend as one morning Ella woke me up -( bear in mind im in the front bedroom and she's out the back) at 5 am from INSIDE the eglu!!
