Willow
On holiday last winter I got a simple henna design painted on my hand which I liked (especially as it isn't permanent, I'm way to conservative to get a permanent tattoo ). Went away again this half term and as I'm consulting at quite a conservative client I decided to get a henna design on my foot. It's so pretty I'm sad to cover it up I realised it will last a lot longer on my foot as isn't constantly in and out of washing up water I'm wondering about getting a more elaborate design painted on when this fades. Has anyone any experience in getting henna tattoo in the UK ? Also how easy is it to do yourself ? I only want simple swirls on my feet which is probably within my artistic ability
The Dogmother
I used to do them a lot - was taught by a Moslem friend. If you prepare the skin and let it 'cook' for long enough then they can last quite a while. Do be aware though that a lot of 'henna' tattoos touted in holiday resorts are in fact done using a black die, which can cause scarring and real skin problems. Lesley and I started a thread about this some years back. proper henna tattoos should be done using henna paste and then left to set with a covering to keep it warm. When it is dry, dab it with lemon juice to help the colour to deepen.
Redwing
Its easy to do yourself. Hubby had a big dragon on his shoulder once and we managed to keep it going for some months by going over it every now and again. the tubes tend to come with a little nozzle like an icing pipe so are really easy to use You need enough time for it to set properly so dont have anything planned for some hours afterwards ALWAYS do a small patch test first even if you use tubes of henna from the same source each time
craftyhunnypie
Easy peasy You can buy cones of the stuff, ready made up from any Asian supermarket, clothing shop or online. They look a bit like a cornetto cone. You can even get glitter henna, which is stunning. I used to get all mine from a clothing shop in Rusholme, Manchester. They also sell kits, stencils & there is usually someone that will do it for you too. Some tattoo studios even do them. Emma.x

Thanks Clare I do vaguely remember reading that now you mention it - at the time I probably filed mentally under 'me get a henna tattoo, never going to happen' and forgot. craftyhunnypie
Yes - well all the ones I've bought have been. It just means that it's been ready mixed, usually with eucalyptus oil. It saves a lot of mess & mither. The cones are very controllable, more so than the tubes. Emma.x

It has faded with time but she still has a faint dragon pattern which doesn't tan and she has to be very careful with anything like hair dye now.
