remove roosting bars?

Recommended Posts

Sorry another question!!!!!!!! I have got my four new girls in an eglu classic and I am wondering if I should remove the roosting bars and fill the poo tray with paper and woodshavings like the nest box. The girls are ex commercial layers that were free range and kept in a barn at night. They all seem to want to be in the nest box which obviously only fits one and they take ages faffing about to settle down and don't seem to be able to get comfortable. my other ex batts all sleep in the nest box of their cube so i am wondering if the newbies would all be happier without the bars. What do you think??

I take it out, leave the front one in and anyone that wants to start roosting will do on the side of the nest box.

I have tried all sorts of variations for a mix of some do some dont roost and this is my first choice now.

I put a base layer of stalosan F followed by Aubiose with a nice layer of Dixons dustless straw, this I find good as it is short and I poo pick daily through the port and top up the straw as needed.. The Aubiose wicks any wet down to the bottom. I am sure you will find they are happy...

Hope this Helps :D

Thanks Sandy, I did remove the bars today and put aubiose on top of a thick layer of newspaper and when they FINALLY went to bed tonight I had a peek inside and three of them were all perching on the edge of the nest box and one was tucked down by the door. I will take your advice and put the front bars back again tomorrow and see how that works out  you are definitely the ex batt guru on this forum!!!! :D:D:D

:D

I have a Rablu too and used it for some, but there were some wanting to roost, we put a wooden bar horizontaly from over the bowl hole with a screw, the other end having a leg.. heaps of room for 2/3 roost and 3 to snuggle behind..

Still removable too..

Done washing up bowls...

Just please check the locking pin on the back of the poo tray..

If it does not locate the tray is removable by Mr Fox and leaves a large gap for a snout to grab a bit of snuggling chook.

Feel they are a tad more vulnerable without the bars but once you know about it it is fine... :D

dixons dust less straw is nice and soft too...

not that mine are spoilt lol

Hi Louise

I have a couple of your girls 'sisters' in a Classic who were doing the same for the first few days. Unfortunately I don't get home from work until after dark and I pop down the garden and put them to bed proper and egg collect when I get in. I've had 2 sharing the nest box for the last couple of nights - roosting bars in situ - but tonight they are in a little row, top to tail on the roosting bars. Ahhhhhh

thanks Sandy,I will look for the dixons dust free straw for them, where do you get yours from?, I don't think I have seen it anywhere. I have got their eglu inside the WIR so they should be safe from Mr Fox  and I am going to put the small set of roosting bars back on in a minute once I have cleaned the eglu out AGAIN. Why do the newbies always poo so much???:lol: I am glad your girls are settling in well caroline!! bless them, I could just picture them all snuggled in a row :D They are such a cheeky bunch aren't they? I am literally wasting my life watching them at the moment, they are so inquisitive and run up the high perch in their WIR so they can get a better look at what I am doing in the garden
