charly1979
My gold line Connie seems to have caught a cold she has the vey occasional sneeze and the odd cough. I am waiting for some vitamin supplement to come in the post and I have put some tonic in thier drinking water but my biggest concern is that she is running around in the rain, when we have the downpours she does seem to have some sense and shelter under the cube with my others (mind you Trixie seems to think if her head is under cover then shes fine, I either see her with her backside poking out of the cube door, bush or anything else she is sheltering under) I have just been out to give them some mince pies and Connie is saturated (at a glance youd think she was an exbatt), I dont have a WIR they are FR at the moment but should I be taking steps to either keep her indoors or a run ??? Shes is looking incredibly healthy, I think she may be about to start her moult and I have a feeling she has stopped laying but her comb is very red and she is incredibly fit you should see how fast she runs from the bottom of the garden when she hears the back door open
Egghead68
I dry mine off with towels/hairdryer if they get very wet (especially if they have colds). I usually shut them in the run if it's more than spitting.
mimi5
I guess just see how she goes. But If you're worried a bit of TLC never goes a miss. My Molly is finishing off her 3rd moult and has been a bit under the weather so after a trip to the vets she had a few nights in with some extra special food treats (moulting is very tiring for them and extra protein helps with feather formation) She has perked up and is back out in the cube with the others. I guess just observe them all and keep an eye out. How are your 2 pekins fairing with their feathered feet??
charly1979
Thanks I shall be keeping an eye on her the daft old chickie As for Annie and Clarabell the seem ok, I did catch them sat on my bench having a good old clean, Clarabells so tiny its funny to watch, Annie is need of some 'bold' or 'persil' as she is no longer a lovely white whoops.but generally do all pekins walk like they need a good pooh or is it just mine
sandyhas3chucks
Please be sure it is "just a cold" respiritatory infections will need something more than a vitamin supplement to clear it up, and they can go down badly very fast... Chickens hide their illnesses very well.. I can offer no suggestions as all my runs have covers on, and none of mine posh or exbats "do" real rain a little drizzle is ok but any more and collars are turned up skirts hoiked up and a dash for total cover.. charly1979
Pretty sure it's a cold but checking her all the time as I know how fast they can go down hill, I have some other stuff on order just in case it's more and I have a good vet nearby if we continue to have rain I may well have to find our old playpen and bring her indoors which possibly won't please the OH or the moggies
mimi5
So how's Connie doing now? Atleast the weather seems to be drying up for a few days!!!
charly1979
At the moment not heard a cough or a sneeze she is happily causings as much chaos as she can with her 6 partners in crime caught her prouldly running around the garden with a huge lump of bread in her beak the neighbour must have put it out for the birds and it must have been dropped in our garden the other 6 chasing her (hilarous). So fingers crossed it was just a cold and the nasty weather wasnt doing her any favours ... Mimi another pekin realated question do yours struggle with the roosting bars in the cube, Annie seems ok but little Clarabel seems to really struggle ??? mimi5
Well they do seem to shuffle and wooble around on them. But I didn't put any of them in there until they were over 6 months old. The thing they really didn't cope with was the ladder!!! So I covered it with stiff garden mesh and cable ties and there fine now, shuffle down and jump of the end!!! Given half a chance they would all be in the nestbox!!!! But then I'd never get any eggs, as they would all go broody pretty quickly!! They are all little characters, love mine to bits!!
