Best liner/ bedding for drop tray

Such an exciting day it was yesterday when several large boxes arrived. OH kept saying he was busy so I got the instruction booklet and my screw driver and did it myself!! It really wasnt that hard!! Instruction booklet was very straight forward and easy to follow. I needed his help when screwing the side panels down and the roof didnt fit properly because of a wrongly placed screw hole on the side panel. A quick phone call to omlet and they are sending me out a new side panel. The lady was so helpful and polite. Am very pleased with their customer service!!!!

 

Last night I let them go to bed in the classic and then took them out and put them in the cube. Tonight I thought I'd let them do it themselves. I put an upside down bucket under the bottom of the ladder but they still insisted on trying to fly up to the 2nd or 3rd step. After a couple of tries, Bess and Bleubelle managed to get in by themselves but poor old Buffy just couldnt work the steps out and kept flying into the steps. She kept putting her head through the rungs but couldnt work out the steps. It was nearly dark and starting to rain so I went in to pick her up but she kept running away. So I sat down and eventually she came over and crouched down (like they do) and let me pick her up and put her in the cube. Bless her. Is there a love symbol??

 

Anyway, man is coming to pick up the classic tomorrow so have given it a thorough clean. What a doddle. I know Omlet chicken houses are expensive but I am such an omlet convert and love them!! I think they are so worth the money!! They are such solid houses and the walls are so thick!! Felt quite sad cleaning it as I do love it but cant have both and I do love my cube.

 

I do have a couple of questions:

There are gaps above the litter trays? Does this matter? Will they get draughts on their bottoms? There are gaps around the edges where the pieces fit together. Is this normal?

Why does the ladder not reach the ground? Is there a reason why omlet did this? I cant see it being much of a problem as the girls seem to fly at the ladder anyway .

My pekins REALLY couldn't manage the ladder......so I modified it by covering it with stiff garden mesh and cable ties. It's fine for them now and I know a few others have found it helpful to do the same, see how your girls go, mine are only feathered feet bantams!!

 

Yes, I worry about the poo tray gaps....and so block them up with flannels this type of weather......chilly bottoms or draughts are my worry!!

 

But the cube is an excellent piece of kit!!!!! I had a wooden coop first....never again!!!! Have just invested in a second hand classic!

Hi Christy, Glad your girls are settling in well in the Cube, cant wait to get mine in my hybrid destroyed the ramp of our wooden coop, so there used to flying up, I think Chooks are clever creatures, the only seem to be needed to be shown something once to get it (unlike my DP -cough) so I bet Buffy will do tomorow night. I love it when they crouch down to be picked up - it shows such trust

 

Agree Omlet CS is great, slight prob with Qute, and nice man was so apologetic, and sending replacement bit 1st class

 

Are you going to add to the cube now?

Hmmm. I dont know. I do love my 3 and they are easy to look after. I have had ex batts in the past and I always feel so sorry for them and love it when I nurse them back to health. They didnt seem to be as hardy as my posh girls. The last lot I had seemed quite flighty and even though I clipped their wings they kept getting out of the garden. I do love my orpingtons so might get a couple more....

I don't worry about the gaps above the poo trays...the girls are toasty and warm when they roost

 

Your girls will get used to the ladder...even my tiny Seramas walk up the rungs with no problem at all, bless 'em

Congratulations on your cube, they are brilliant aren't they. I used the netting on the ladder too but then I only have little silkies. Have fun!

The girls have put themselves to bed the past couple of nights so have worked out the ladder okay When I let them out this morning I put my hand in there and it does feel quite warm. It really is a good product with the thick walls. So glad I got it rather than the cheaper plastic models that are around.
