Eglus/cubes inside or attached to outside of WIR

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm weighing up the pros and cons of putting (probably) 2 eglus INSIDE a 12' x 6' WIR.

I have 1 spare eglu at present.

As I see it

Pros.

1. They won't get covered in snow and so will be warmer

2. Won't need to be fixed so moveable

3. 2 Eglus (as opposed to 1 cube) would provide a separate sleeping place if one or more didn't get on with the rest

Cons.

1. Cleaning with water - excess will end up in run (unless eglus taken outside)

2. Cleaning (without letting hens out to FR) will mean they will be 'helping'

3. Will have to go into run to collect eggs (don't want extra holes through run)

Can you think of any others ? Or from your experience, which do you prefer and why ?

Thanks, H

I prefer eglus inside runs personally as it makes the footprint of the run so much neater, protects the Eglu against predators and keeps an awful lot of the damp out of the Eglu

My favourite run has the Eglu on a table. I never use the lynch pin to hold the Eglu lid on so its very easy to whip the top off and clean the Eglu (or remove it outside in bits for cleaning) and it being table height makes it easy to clean in situ (I rarely use water) and you can spin it round to get at the various parts of it

On a daily basis I simply reach through the front door for the eggs

If you tend to use a lot of water to clean your Eglu I do think that even having it on the outside of the run isnt ideal as water will go everywhere. I always prefer to move the while Eglu right away and on to the lawn for a full-on clean

If putting the Eglu inside the run make sure the door is wide enough!

Also having the Eglu on the inside means if after a few months you realise that your siting of it is less than perfect - either weatherwise or practically you can move the Eglu within the run to suit
