merlina
Last week my nice new Omlet netting fence arrived (ordered via Amazon for which I had some vouchers - so it was almost free!) Finally, today, for the first time, it wasn't pouring with rain/snow, so I venture into the swamp/garden and after a couple of hours of tangling and swearing, finally erect a lovely 21 m run. I gaze proudly at my hens and handiwork and gather up packaging and odds and end to go an have a much deserved cup of tea. Then I see Edna spot what must have been the one teeny tiny spot where the net wasn't pegged tightly to the ground - and in a flash she's escaped. Quickly followed by the other three. Who knew hens were burrowing escape artists!?
jasperaliceuk
Oh, they are good - so good. If you put them back where they belong they will just patrol until the find the same hole. My escape committee is led by Gwen the Hen. Mind you considering the state of my netting which is totally fox eaten there is always a hole somewhere. Jenthelibrarian
I haven't had chooks for very long... However, one of the very first things they taught me is that to call someone 'chicken' should not be an insult Chickens are bold, brave, resourceful and all-round good eggs Not to mention hilarious. And sometimes a bit annoying, but only a tiny bit. Mine, among many talents, come when called, recognise their special 'treats' dish, have got my rather fierce bad ginger cat completely cowed, know to see off magpies but to welcome the squirrels [messy eaters, they drop titbits from the bird-table] know that if FR-ing under my DH's watch gets a bit boring that a quick knock on his office door will get him to come out to play, and all in all have us at their beck and call. Or squawk.
