Millie-Annie
I have decided I am going to get two pure breeds to replace my much loved Marigold, as hopefully they will live longer than 3 years I have found someone near to me and the breeds they have are: Welsummers Rhode Island Reds Cuckoo Marans Crested Cream legbars any thoughts, do's or don't's etc
sparkysmum
I would go for docile breeds; I love my faverolle, she is quiet, docile, is happy to be picked up & handled and is still laying at over 4yrs. Of my other pure breeds, I love my Dumpies too. Light sussex equally lovely, brown leghorn hates being handled and impossible to catch hold of. Araucana doesn't like being handled but lays the most gorgeous blue eggs.... impossible decision.... have lots then you can have interesting eggs and easy to handle hens. good_egg
Could you squeeze in one of each? I have CCL and cuckoo maran at mo. love the blue eggs and maran hasn't laid yet, but I'm a sucker for a chunkier bird so would say get one of each of these. Others are good but you should get a blue and a brown egg if you go these two!! Welsummers lay darker eggs too, but Lulu was a bit flighty/nippy. RIR was Viv who was tamest of our original girls. But reckon I would still go legbar and maran. How exciting!
