charly1979
Today has been rather nice weather wise (meant to be having a downpour assuming that is delayed ) Anyway it has meant I have been out with my girls admittedly I was meant to be perhaps tidying the garden or making a 'to do list' However I found myself in the run chatting and cuddling with my girls Happy to see that I am getting 4 eggs a day so that's a little over 50% of the girls in production and Annie one of my pekins has started crouching making it easier to grab her for a cuddle but also means we cant be too far away from getting eggs from her too, Clarabel isn't yet but she does look a lot younger so its only a matter if time. Anyway a cabbage ended up in my shopping trolley for the girls and think you tell from the pics they enjoyed it, it is now destroyed. Trixie made me laugh I feel she may be the more intelligent of my clan as she certainly was trying to undo the knot on the string Finally got round to making the run a bit more mud proof I hope

charly1979
What lovely girl's Is that a automatic door opener on your cube and if so where did you get it ? At the moment I am getting up at 6 to let my girl's out and I am on holiday OH says I am crazy Thanks Yes it is an automatic door opener and a godsend, we spend Saturdays nights at our caravan so its brilliant knowing that the door will close them in and let them out they are aware of their curfew I got mine on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Titan-Automatic-Door-Opener-for-Chicken-House-Hen-Houses-Poultry-Coops-/310596704135?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry&hash=item4851019787 This one is great it has a timer so you can decided when you want them out and what time to close. My girls are set to get up at 8:35 and shuts at 9 (will alter when the nights get longer) it also has a function so you can bring the door up or down without changing the settings which I have used on the odd sunday morning when Marilyn or Connie have been making a disturbance You can get ones that are dawn to dusk and my dad has altered one of my first ones so that they have this function however I rekon with the light mornings and Julian my cockerel he will soon be putting a timer on. As for the frame mine is fixed to my dad made me that for Christmas, it has hinges on the left hand side so when I want/need to give the cube a deep clean I just undo a screw and it opens out so I can slide the roof forwards. Hope that helps
Chortle Chook
Is your wooden house a Forsham Cottage Arks one from Omlet? It is really nice that you have a mix of the traditional and the modern How do they compare?
charly1979
The wooden one was an EBay cheapy, theres another wooden house hiding behind the cube (slightly bigger) The one behind the cube is falling apart and I use it to store the bedding in all of which is in waterproof bags. The one you can see in the picture is only about 2 years old. I was very disappointed with it, it just got so damp to the point I put insulation inside the roof (the silver bubble wrap stuff) and then roofing felt with a liner on the roof (found out after that's not good due to mites) It also got to the point that the doors swelled so I had to open the back with a hammer and close with a hammer not too bad if you only needed to open the doors to clean (the slidey tray thing never worked) but the chickens living in that Pudding, Pie, Tullah and Fliss (oh I miss them) would insisi on laying the eggs in the corner furthest away from the nest box .... thus needing a hammer on a daily basis. Hubby must have had a funny five moments as one night he asked if the girls were ok as it was so wet, I replied yes they were but I wish we had a plastic house and wait for he agreed. Hey presto cube was ordered I do use the wooden one though as a sick bay and when Prilly went broody I split the pen and she spent her days in there daft bird would hop onto the house each night to get back to the cube for bed yet spend the day in run sqwaking about wanting to be in the cube on her nest ??? Attention seeker I think. Whilst I love the cube and the colours (if I won the lottery Id get one in every colour) I do love the look also of the wooden ones too
