first broody of the year day 23 update

Recommended Posts

Snap . Biscuit, who is my No.1 broody Pekin, finally sucumbed and went all 'pancaked' last weekend. She is now on 6 silver laced wyandotte eggs. My 'reserve' pekin, Caramel, started to show distinct signs of broodiness yesterday, which I'm not going to try and break her of yet, just in case Biscuit decides to give up (never happened before, but you never know with this game!). My hatch date is around the 4th May, so perfect timing for the May B/H weekend .

Good luck with your hatch!

Andrew

I have a Legbar/Vorwerk cross hen sitting on 6 Splash Marans eggs due 9th May.

2 will go to the flock :) and four into the Larder :(

I'm toying with just keeping the 2 best ones and raising the others for the freezer boy's go in there anyway as my last batch of maran crosses the girls were 'bigger' than the boys and most of these eggs are maran based crosses

candled them tonight the 7 remaining eggs have signs of growth in them. no 8 (the only green one in the clutch) got ate yesterday but from the remains it was growing too would mind so much buy it was the biggest green egg that I've had from them this year which is partly why I'd put it in the clutch but 7/8 left is ok with 2 that look a bit small

My 'coop of shame' (broody coop) was freshly painted a few weeks ago ready for hormonal hens to go cold turkey in, it has its forth inmate now! So four broodies so far, all as mad as a box of frogs :wall: and clutches of eggs hidden all around the garden grrrrr, more silly girls clucking away too. I am NOT hatching this year.

one chick hatched over night I think it was a couple of hours old at 7am as it was more or less dry but not quite fully fluffy

a black one with a bib from my maran naked neck line of crosses I was hoping for a clean necked one

day 23 well this hatch has been a disaster Rebecca crushed 3 eggs with chicks in them over Sunday and Monday all 3 were fully formed so I removed the last 3 eggs to the incubator Monday afternoon one egg started to leak Monday night so that's gone that leaves 2 eggs which I'll give until Wednesday morning but I think there DIS so that leaves me with a single chick with Rebecca that's 3 days old which I take is to old now to add a couple of chicks to, but do I get a couple about the same age and rear them until all 3 are old enough to live together or set a few eggs in the 'bator and have a few chicks that are 3 weeks behind the lone chick?

Oh no............

Will Rebecca be happy enough to bring that single chick up? I honestly don't know least she's hatched is 3, the most is 8

I took my broody off her eggs on one occasion ...to let her poo,eat and drink ...as she hadn't come out for three days and she had one egg caught underneath and I dropped it about a foot :(

I went and picked up a couple of day old chicks yesterday afternoon (well I say day olds they were hatching over night and yesterday) the Barnevelder hatched overnight the Cuckoo Maran was a few hours old it was dry but not 100% fluffy. I'd locked mom and chick in the coop while I was out then put the chicks straight under her when I got back she didn't bat and eye lid and she's a lot happier this morning their all out in the little run and she's brooding them all
