BBQing a topside of beef - Help!

I've never tried this but if I did I think I would coat it in a flour/mustard/lard paste and seal that first in a pan. I'm sure I saw that on a history programme about spit roasting so I guess it would work for a bbq. The 'pastry' keeps it moist and stops it charring round the edges too much.
