AlisonH
Had a soft shell egg during last week which is unusual for my 2 chickens but has happened before. Got 2 normal eggs this morning and both girls been eating and drinking fine and happily pecking around garden. But tonight was watching out of the window when my Amber Star, Lottie, suddenly laid a softie (intact) on the patio then stood for a few minutes with eyes closed and laid what seemed like yolk and blood. She was sort of hunched up up at the back. Now back in run and continuing to eat and drink. Any ideas, I'm really worried
Gertie
It sounds like it might be a lash. Looks like a rubbery meaty blob? If that's the case, its shedding some of the inside linings, it can make them off colour. Is this an older hen? Perhaps she might be coming to the end of her laying? or require some supplements. Im sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon. I found a picture of a lash on another post. be http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&p=775938
AlisonH
Thanks Gertie for your help though having looked at lots of pictures of lashes I'm not sure it was that. Lottie's only 2 although has always been a high egg producer. She came out this morning and had some food though is now back in the eglu. There was one egg this morning which I assume was from Charlie although it was uncharacteristically small. Did lots of reading up on peritonitis, hoping it's not that but could well be. AlisonH
Update: well Lottie has been out all morning, chasing birds, eating grass, popping back to the run for food and looking well. Let's hope it continues!
Gertie
Really glad to hear she is behaving normally again. Hope she stays well & happy!
Egghead68
That sounds promising! I think their abdomens usually feel squishy with liquid if they have peritonitis.
AlisonH
Is it worth worming her? She hasn't been done for ages but I don't want to make her feel ill by doing it?
Egghead68
Yes - good idea.
