Why can't I grow broad beans THIS year ?

Recommended Posts

Never had this problem before.

Sowed (2nd lot of) beans in modules in unheated greenhouse - not a single one germinated!

I also planted barlotti beans, peas and french beans and had at least 90% success rate.

Whats so different about getting broad beans to germinate please ?

I presume the seed is not old? Is it your own or bought in? (Not that I can think of anything useful to add either way). Usual things I can think of are a)too cold b)too wet but normally those are problems with direct sowing. Mice? There is a lot of interest in sowing to the phases of the moon, and that this isn't just beneficial, its also that if you sow on certain days/dates things will all go horribly wrong  Or, I suppose, not go at all  Sorry I can't think of anything more helpful.

I'd say it's dead seed as you've had French and barlotti germinate as both of these can be poor germinators. broad beans will germinate at a lower temp than most beans and are regarded as an easy seed to grow which is why schools use them as a first time plant for younger kids to grow
