Chicken boarders

Hi,

 

I have been waiting to get my chickens until my garden was finished as it needed completely re-doing. I have almost finished an i just need to lay a flooring.

 

I cant decide between fake grass and gravel/garden pebbles although i was leaning more towards fake grass. My chickens will be in a coop and large run most of the time although i would like to let them out for a wander as often as possible.

 

My question is which surface is more chicken friendly?

I can't imagine fake grass is very useful for chickens as they can't scratch or eat it! Real grass has to be the best so they can peck and top up on greens and insects.

I know real grass would be best but i don't have much option as i have a concrete yard which ive been doing up so those are the only 2 options i have. Most of the time they will be in their run with wood chippings underfoot its just for when i let them out!

They will kick up all the gravel.

I think you can hose down the fake grass. Yes they kick up the gravel but again you can hose it down and rake it over. Probably depends which you would prefer to look at. I have a border that is all gravel, they love digging it up but it is easy to sort out. I'd be a bit concerned they might eat the fake grass!

Defo the fake grass you can power wash the poop away you cant on gravel our friend has it and her chooks are fine with it, they have flower beds for the chooks to forage in and a large barked area too their happy xx

After five years of either mud or dust and three blades of grass we had an artificial lawn put down, no more mud, easy to clean, chickens just walk across it to the flower beds. The poo just gets scooped up or brushed off depending on its age!
