What makes a chicken coop easy to live with?

Hi, I have two bantams sitting on eggs in my eglu. My question is has anyone else had such small chicks in an eglu. I'm concerned that they will fall through the roosting bars! We always line the poo tray with sawdust so I was thinking of taking the roosting bars out whilst the chicks are little.

I have. Take the bars out and re-locate mum into the tray section in a nice thick layer of aubiose or similar. I also use a ramp at the front of the eglu for the first couple of weeks.

When we used a GO last year we took out the bars which was fine, I did however put something underneath the tray just to stop any movement up and down, though with the weight of a bantam that may not be such an issue

Definitely take the bars out and rig up something along the lower edge of the Eglu run to prevent the tiny chicks from escaping through the mesh. I use lengths of linkabord.

 

I'd also put something in front of the Eglu door to act as a step, as the chicks will struggle to get into the Eglu at first. I used a thin paving brick.

Agreed. I also use some of the non-slip matting inside the Eglu for the first week so they don't get splay legs. Never had a problem hatching in one.
