dogs and omlet chicken fencing

Recommended Posts

hi,

does anybody have any experiences of using the poultry fencing from omlet and how well it might keep out a naughty little dog? I've read its not predator proof but wondered is that because foxes could climb over?

we were going to put up a picket fence but that would be a permanent fixture and I like the idea of moving the fenced off area around the garden as is don't really like the idea of the chooks always being in the same area as might become boring for them PPGNR

id be grateful for any advice and tips :)

I have a dog but he's scared of the girls so keeps a healthy distance  . I think the issue with foxes is that they chew the netting to get at the hens. I don't imagine a dog would do that (although I may be wrong!).

Make sure you peg it securely along the base (with tent pegs or similar) to prevent any wriggling underneath  .

It depends on your dog I guess. I know mine would chew her way through the netting (she has chewed her way through chicken wire in the past) or force her way under to get at the hens, not to mention the fact that she could terrify them by throwing herself at the netting in an attempt to get to the hens. In my situation, I'd have to buy the electrified netting.

If your dog is more placid and unlikely to make it her life's work to eat your hens, then you'd probably get on okay with the netting.

My little dogs are good with the chickens - in fact I put them inside the Omlet netting with them to free range when I am working on the veg patch.

However, the dogs can both get out of the netting - one bulldozes it by running at it fast; the other kind of pulls it down strand by strand until she can climb over it. It pings back up behind them!
