AlisonH
Neither of my chickens have laid for a week which is unusual but I suspect they have been eating too many gooseberries and treats round the garden. However, one of them, Lottie, has started to sit down a lot. She is eating normally and gets up and walks round for a bit and seems herself when out free ranging but just seems to be sitting down a lot in the run. She also appears to be moulting. Any ideas? Patricia W
If she is moulting, she will stop laying for a bit. Or she could be bothered by a "softie"- an egg without a proper shell. On a number of occasions, I've had chickens who sit around looking miserable for a day or two, then I found a soft egg in the coop and lo and behold! the sad hen is as right as rain. Just keep an eye on her, and if you become really worried take her to the vet.
Eggasperated
I posted on here last week as my girls had stopped laying and were moping around, they have now started to moult - one of them quite dramatically. It does seem to be quite early in the year for a moult but they are 18 months old so I wasn't really surprised, it was just the sitting around for a week before they started that confused me. It sounds as if your girls are starting a moult as well so they won't really be laying, at least this way they will get it over with before the cold weather - my previous lot used to leave it to as late in the year as possible . AlisonH
Is it worth worming them as I haven't done it for quite a while?
