newcountrygirl
My friend's cockerel Henry looks terrible. A couple of weeks ago my friend across the road came over to ask me to look at her cockerel Henry. When I saw him he looked dreadful - his eyes were nearly shut and the who of one side of his face was all yellow and crusty. She said this had happened virtually overnight. I came back and looked on the forum to see if i could see anything. The only references i could see seemed to suggest it could be a fungal infection. It suggested bathing his eyes and using Daktarin or Sudacrem on the face. I immediately told her. She has bathed his eyes a few times and they do look better but to me his face doesnt seem much better although she says it is. She has 4 hens in with him and none of them seem to be affected. Has anyone any other ideas what this could be? Got a message from my friend this morning to say Henry had died. So sad. I went over to see him yesterday and came back and told my OH that he didnt look good and that I had told this to my friend who said he seemed better to her. I am getting a bit worried cos she originally had one of my girls, plus she bought two young silkies and Henry. Now the only one of the originals left is the girl I gave her plus she has recently acquired 3 more girls. The coop always seems clean so I am not sure what's happening. Egluntyne
She needs to get him to a vet if he has been like this for a couple of weeks! He might have a condition similar to scaly leg mite, which affects the face.
newcountrygirl
Thanks Egluntyne - I will let her know.
newcountrygirl
Do you know if it is infectious. I am meant to be looking after her hens for a week starting tomorrow and I dont want to bring anything back to my girlies. Having said that - the hens that are in with him seem fine. What is it called - do you know?
Egluntyne
If it is scaly face mite, then yes it is contagious. It is not as common as scaly leg mite, so a vet's opinion is best, as it could be anything. The treatments are similar .

newcountrygirl
After what happened with my friends Cockerel - I would definately go to the vet. She tried putting Daktarin on then sudacrem and she told me he seemed a lot better. I hadnt seen him since she first started and was shocked to see him. He died the follwing day.
