Must haves for Gap Year travel?

Recommended Posts

My DS does a fair bit of travel and this summer went to Australia via Thailand,. I would have got him one of those bottles to take with him had I seen them, they look like an excellent idea. The only "must have" he took with him was a silk liner for a sleeping bag, which he used a couple of time in less than lovely hostels and seem to have protected him from bed bugs etc which had been an issue on a previous trip.

I would get them alarms for hotel/hostel doors. I have one I use when I'm concerned but I didn't bother recently staying at a Hilton and someone tried to break into my room at midnight  He got the door open but had created enough noise I'd had time to get to the other side and was able to push back and shout at the top of my voice so he retreated.

Not staying anywhere without using a door alarm now...

The only thing about an alarm is that a lot of hostels involve shared rooms, where you couldn't really use one. My niece is nearing the end of 15 months travelling, and she'd probably say that her digital camera card has been one of her must-haves! Not suggesting you buy them a whole camera, but if you know what sort they have an extra storage card could be useful? The sarong sounds a good idea too, and that bottle looks amazing.
