jambo
Hi Everyone Not a good day so far pearl my new girl that I picked up last sunday died after being very ill all weekend But now I was out in the garden having a fag when there was a almighty noise coming from my chicken coop I thought at first something had managed to get in and was attacking them but when I opened the door Pam my first chicken (shouldn't say it but my favourite) was violently throwing herself around the coop being sick gulping for air the collapsed on the floor struggling to breath and her comb had turned purple Is she having a heart attack? If anyone has experienced this could you please let me know what I can do? James Edited September 17, 2013 by Guest
Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry about Pearl . Poor Pam doesn't sound well at all - did she recover after that attack? A purple comb can be a sign of heart problems, I believe. You don't think she had something stuck in her throat? Fingers crossed for her, poor thing . jambo
She's now sitting up a bit more but she's still struggling to breath I've tried to check her throat but can't see anything I really hope she recovers!!
Purplemaniacs
Oh no what a rough time you are having. Was she having a sort of fit do you think? Purple comb can be a sign of heart disease. How is she now, did she recover from the episode? If she recovered I would leave her with the others overnight and see how she is in the morning but if she is still not well I would bring her indoors and try to keep her calm and get her to a vet in the morning. If she is very ill I would worry that if she was left with the others they may attack her. Chrissie
jambo
Yeah I've had better days Yeah I defineatly think it was a fit of some sort because she was throwing herself against the walls, landing on her back, landing face first I've just checked on her and her breathing has steadied and she sitting up and her eyes seem alot more bright but if she doesn't seem herself I will try to get an appointment with my local chicken friendly vet Shes the head honcho of my flock when she was having the fit or whatever it was all my other girls either ran outside or stayed well back on the perch and when betty and pearl was ill my other girls didn't attack them at all it was more like they were taking care of them and looked like they were grooming them James
Luvachicken
I'm sorry to read you are having a difficult time at the moment. Is Pam feeling any better today ? Or have you been to the vets ? Do let us know how she is getting on.
jambo
Hi everyone Good news Pam seems to be recovering well from the episode last night This morning I had to carry her out of the house and put her near the water which she started drinking on her own and then she started eating aswell I've just got home from work and checked on her and she's up and about looking nice and alert but her comb is still a bit purple but I rung the vet and she said if she is eating and drinking and seems fine in herself then not to worry about bringing her in but if she has another fit or starts looking ill then to bring her straight in So I'm keeping my fingers crossed and keeping an eye on her James
jambo
Hi Pam had another episode tonight but during her fit I think she landed on her neck and I heard a crack then she just twitched for a second or so then died so I think she broke her neck as she was laid on her front but her head was pointing upwards with her comb against her crop The way she was acting before she died and the way she was moving her neck it looked very similar to a video on youtube of a chicken having a stroke but I don't know for certain She really looked like she was getting better today She will be very missed I'm dreading telling my 4yr old daughter James
Purplemaniacs
Oh James I am so sorry to hear the update. Poor Pam. I hope your daughter is ok, it is hard telling young ones but I think the loss of a family pet is a valuable lesson, sadly death is part of life and I think it helps children in the future if they experience the loss of a pet before they loose a member of the family such as grandparent. At least that is what I found when mine were young and now with the grandchildren, I always talk to them if I have lost a chicken. I dread the day that their favourite named chickens go! Thinking of you.Give her an extra hug from her Omlet friends. Chrissie
jambo
Thanks It's not that I'm worried how she will take the death of one of the chickens its the fact its Pam, Ashden grew up with her we've had pam since she was 1yrs old and she was all of our favourite, with all of them that have died I've taken it worse than Ashden has There's a bit of fighting going on at the minute because Pam was top girl in the flock I wonder who will take over from her James
Luvachicken
I am so sorry to read the update about Pam. She sounded like a much loved pet and I'm sure she will have enjoyed the life she shared with you all. RIP Pam xx
