Millie-Annie
I bought my three girls on August 10th, they were 12 weeks old. They still are not laying. Any idea when they will start? My Meva has quite a nice red comb now, but the other two don't. Can't say whether they crouch as you can't get close enough without them running away, sadly
Olly
Anything between 18-24 weeks depending on breed, BUT it's possible that hens which haven't started laying by now may not lay until the spring. They need around ten hours of daylight in order to stimulate egg production, hybrid hens will often lay through the winter especially in their first year, but pure breeds and older hens are more likely to slow down or stop laying. You can expect things to start up again around Valentine's Day.
Sandychick
Three of my hens are about the same age as yours. As they are pure breeds I'm not expecting any eggs now until late Feb - March. Soooooo long to wait for my first blue egg!! I also think it is quite nice that they have some time to grow up and settle in before they start laying though
Millie-Annie
That's fine and I agree. I bought pure breeds because I wanted pets not laying machines. So long Ivy keeps laying that will be fine, not sure whether supermarket eggs would be the same anymore
PoachedPlease
My pol columbine just laid yesterday, I thought I had missed the window too. She is 27 weeks which seems old. No blue eggs though We are the 20% that didn't get them. Instead they are the weirdest grey/khaki colour. I can't quite face eating it!! sjp
I've got a may Hatched and a June hatched pullet 27 and 22 weeks old respectively that haven't started to lay yet, that I doubt will start before the new year and I think the younger one will be first I'm down to one egg every other day from a 3 year old maran cross
debbiedoobs
I have silkies and they've all laid at different times, 2 I brought in at 10 weeks old didn't lay till they were bout 30weeks, but in a week of each other. Then my little lavender silkie we hatched laid exactly 20weeks old!... So.... Think it can change barred to breed, chicken to chicken.
